What is Cocopeat?

The story of cocopeat — from waste to wonder.

Cocopeat — also called coir peat, coco peat, or coconut peat — is derived from the fibrous husk of the coconut, the brown outer shell that encases every coconut you've ever seen. When coco husk chips is extracted from this husk during processing, the spongy material that remains is cocopeat. For decades, it was considered waste. Today, it is one of the fastest-growing horticultural inputs in the world.

The reason for cocopeat's extraordinary rise is simple: it is better than peat moss in almost every measurable way. It holds water up to ten times its weight while maintaining excellent aeration for root systems. It has a naturally balanced pH. It is completely free of pathogens and weed seeds. It does not compact over time. And unlike peat moss — which is mined from ecologically sensitive bogs in Canada, Ireland, and Finland — cocopeat is a renewable agricultural by-product. As the EU and other regulatory bodies tighten environmental rules around peat use, cocopeat is no longer just an alternative. It is the successor.

At Sun Exports, we process cocopeat in our own facility from coconut husks sourced from the farms and processing units of Dindigul and the surrounding coconut-belt districts of Tamil Nadu, India. We wash each batch multiple times to lower electrical conductivity to below 0.7 mS/cm — the threshold demanded by professional hydroponic growers and European greenhouse operators. We test every batch in-house for EC, pH, and moisture before compression or packing. What leaves our warehouse is not just a commodity. It is a tested, certified, ready-to-use growing medium.
